Pascal Bernier is the conceptualist of the Wild Project roster. Born in 1960 and working in Brussels, he emerged on the Belgian and international scene in the early 1990s, and it was one series that fixed his name: the Accidents de chasse — hunting accidents — taxidermied animals whose fatal wounds the artist has carefully, tenderly bandaged. A fox, a rabbit, a fawn, even a young elephant: the dressing arrives too late by definition, and the works hold death and care, horror and comedy, in a single absurd gesture. Around that signature Bernier has built a broader practice in sculpture, photography, and video that takes aim at the machinery of contemporary life — techno-science, industry, mass media, the consumer market — always with the dark, deadpan humor he has described in the Belgian press as purging through laughter.
His exhibition at Wild Project Gallery carried a title squarely in that register: Ultraliberal – Wild Project Gallery, Luxembourg (from 15 Dec 2016), opened in the gallery's second winter. Here the public record is thin, and this file says so rather than embroider: the archived record preserves the title, the artist, and the opening date. Which works hung — whether bandaged animals, the market-facing sculptures, or photographs — is not established by the surviving captures. Documented additions are invited through the contact form.
Bernier remained on the gallery's frozen roster to the end in 2022; his work continues to be shown and sold through Belgian galleries.
