In a roster built almost entirely from photographers, Arny Schmit was the painter. Born in Wiltz in 1959 and working in Luxembourg, Schmit paints on multilayer cardboard, cutting into and building up the support so the picture plane gains an actual third dimension. His subject is a wilderness that never quite settles into landscape painting: dense, often near-monochrome natural scenes assembled like collages, thematic fragments recombined into a single composition, with the man-made world sometimes intruding as embedded LED light — civilization wired directly into the forest. His public exhibition record runs from 2009, with solo and group showings in Luxembourg, Germany, Spain, and Belgium, and works held in the collection of Luxembourg's culture ministry and the two museums of the City of Luxembourg.
Wild Project Gallery opened his exhibition in the autumn of its second year: Journal intime – Wild Project Gallery, Luxembourg (from 11 Nov 2016). The archived record preserves the title — an intimate diary, fitting for a painter whose landscapes read as interior states — and the opening date; a full checklist has not survived in the public captures.
Schmit is also the roster artist whose Luxembourg gallery representation is easiest to trace forward. Since its founding in 2021, Reuter Bausch Art Gallery in Luxembourg City has represented him, exhibiting recent bodies of work including the Whispers of the Trees paintings; a 2019 solo exhibition, Der Geschmack von Schnee, was held at a Berlin gallery.
